Google (GOOG) has hired two lucky young men to ride around France on dopey looking tricycles snapping up photos of historical sites that are inaccessible by car. This three-wheeler is a sight with its long pole holding nine cameras, a GPS, a computer and a generator. But the contraption tooling around the French capital needs all that gear to do its job – adding three-dimensional images to Google's Street View Maps.

The riders, wearing Google tee-shirts and white helmets, are visiting well-known sites such as the Chateau de Versailles, west of Paris, the Jardin du Luxembourg on the city's Left Bank or Les Halles, in the busy centre of the French capital.

KatMouse is cool, free mouse wheel enhancement for Windows that I've been using for several months now. Great tool!

The prime purpose of the KatMouse utility is to enhance the functionality of mice with a scroll wheel, offering 'universal' scrolling: moving the mouse wheel will scroll the window directly beneath the mouse cursor (not the one with the keyboard focus, which is default on Windows OSes). This is a major increase in the usefullness of the mouse wheel.

It's been about 5 years since I updated this screensaver. I kept the old versions around, in-case someone still wants them. The new version (Version 3), supports any resolution and also supports dual monitors. Although, the newer version doesn't have quite the customized speed options as the old versions had.

Sandboxie - have you heard of it? used it?

What is Sandboxie?
This is mostly for 'geeks' and 'power users'. If you're not very 'geeky', you probably won't be interested in Sandboxie. Sandboxie is a framework that runs your programs in an isolated space (a sandbox), keeping them from making permanent changes to other programs or files. This is an excellent solution to keeping your system safe if you install or test software regularly. This is also great for secure web browsing, enhanced privacy and keeping your Windows environment lean.

If you're a developer/programmer, Sandboxie allows you to run your program in a sandbox. No changes are made to your system - that are only made in the sandbox. When you're done, just delete the sandbox. That's it. Your system never knew it existed. All trace gone.

If you're concerned about security and privacy, and you're a little 'geeky', you may find this to be a great, must-have tool.

Just for the geeks and SysAdmin's out there, I've developed a simple screen saver that displays your preferred log file (ie: system log file, windowsupdate log, etc) and displays it as scrolling text. The most recent log entries are shown at the top of the screen, while the others scroll. You can also include an optional background image, which the log text scrolls over. It's donationware - donations and suggestions welcomed.

Kuler is a program from Adobe that's free and in its final release. It's a Web-based application, so there's nothing to download.
You can create "color themes", color palettes, etc, and save them online or download them as swatches to use in your Adobe applications. You can view the most popular color themes that others have created and download theirs, too. What's really cool is you can create a color palette from a photograph - easily.

I've been getting some great press about my IconHider program, but recently some of the Anti-Virus programs are falsely labeling it as having a trojan or virus. NOT TRUE!

False alerts from Anti-virus programs: There are NO trojans and NO viruses in this program! For some reason, some of the anti-virus programs are falsely identifying this program as having a trojan or something detrimental. NOT TRUE! The reason this is happening, is severe lack of intelligence from the developers of these antivirus programs. IconHider is simply making low-level Microsoft API calls to do the functions it needs to do - such as hide the desktop icons, start the screensaver, etc, etc. So if you get these FALSE alerts from your antivirus program, simply tell it to ignore IconHider.exe in the preference settings of the antivirus program. All antivirus programs will allow you to specify programs that you KNOW are SAFE, which includes IconHider.

Here are some interesting facts I've gathered from what I've listened to so far:

We have reached an inflection point. There is more malicious software being created everyday than good software. 65% of unique software programs delivered to users were malicious.
Identity theft: during the last two months of 2007, almost 50 million people across the globe had their identities exposed; 3 lost identities every second.
Business Sectors: Of the data breaches, the government sector accounted for 20% of the overall data breaches. Note that this 20% accounted for over "60%" of the identities exposed.
The vast majority of identity theft is actually committed with data that is not collected online. It's either dumpster-diving, robbing the mailbox, etc.
Worldwide: There are 4 babies born every second. There are 25 cell phones sold every second. There are 40 million new wireless, telephone subscribers signed-up for cell phone every month.

Lost cameras "phone home" to catch thieves - A New Yorker was visiting Florida and accidentally lost her camera. The camera had a Eye-Fi 2gb SD card in it. So when the people who stole her camera used it to take snapshots of themselves, guess what? The next time they crossed an internet connection, the camera uploaded the pictures to the web.

Launchy 2.0

Sorry, it's been a while since I've posted - but it's worth the wait! If you have a lot of software on your computer, how do you easily find and start the programs? Are you always waiting for the Start menu to load and then spending too much time looking for that program name?

I've had this ever-growing issue for some time. There are many quick-launcher programs out there, but where's one that's really easy to use, painless to install, and easy on your system? I've found a great solution by Josh Karlin. It's called Launchy. You can read more and download it here: www.launchy.net

What is Launchy? It's an EASY way to open files, folders, programs and websites. It easily and quickly finds the programs for you. It's an easy install. You just launch it by hitting your ALT+spacebar. For example, to run FireFox, I just typed F, and it guessed FireFox first, and then I just hit enter. :)
There are far too many options and features to list here...BUT you may ask, so how much is this program?? It's FREE! :)

Check it out....it'll save you a ton of time. And it's fun & easy to use.

I've developed a new program called "ksTaskbar"! This is a program for those of us who would like to have a clean desktop (few or no icons) and EASY access to our favorite short-cuts, programs, files, etc. It's a taskbar that you can move around and customize...and it's currently free! :)

I have a new version of Weather1-lite (my lite version of Weather1). This new (beta) version allows you to choose from several tray icons - temperature icon, weather icon, or both! Customizations are available for the temperature icon as well. :)

As of July 10, 2007, Adobe has released a security update to it's Photoshop CS2 and CS3 products. If you use Photoshop CS2 or CS3, be sure to update your Photoshop as soon as possible from here.
